Normally the destruction of Superman's planet of Krypton is shown as one of two ways: either the planet will turn red hot and become a star/sun, or it will explode. The former method is reminiscent of an old science fiction movie, "This Island Earth" (1950) where the planet that dies is attacked by an enemy planet, loses it's protective shield, and is fatally bombarded until it turns red hot and becomes a sun. The latter method was used (at least until the 1960s) to explain the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter as an unstable planet that cracked up because it could not resist gravitational forces pulling it apart.

The approach here by tachyon 1986 is really interesting. The planet is shown as a dark black core that is now shooting off light similar to the way the Sun does in our solar system. One even sees various orbits of small rock fragments in elliptical or circular shape shooting out from the dyng planet - soon crossing the universe to create the deadly or dangerous forms of kryptonite that will threaten Superman or Supergirl. That dark core is quite effective, with the eminating light waves suggesting conflatration and death but also the creation of new life. The total effect is really quite pleasing.
